The introduction of the new 64 MBytes SmartMedia card onto the market is due in the medium term. As was the case with the 16 MBytes and 32 MBytes versions its compatibility to older digital cameras is not always guaranteed.
The introduction of the 16 MBytes SmartMedia card had already seen a number of digital cameras fail to work with these memory cards or function properly only after a firmware update. With the appearance of 32 MBytes SmartMedia cards this problem occurred again, though on a much smaller scale. A number of digital cameras users had to send their cameras in, since some digital camera updates could only be done by the service department. The cause of the incompatibility is the inside design of the SmartMedia card: the control systems for CompactFlash cards are integrated into the card itself, while for SmartMedia cards they are situated inside the camera. The advantage of integrated control circuits is that the card takes care of the memory allocation, so to speak. When memory cards with greater capacities are introduced the internal control systems are always up to date and the camera can use the card, just like that. This isn't possible with the SmartMedia design since the camera's operating system takes care of memory allocation and simply often doesn't "know" the new card capacities. The problem has been intensified because of disagreements among memory card manufacturers about the SmartMedia specifications.
This dilemma seems to have been solved for the 64 MBytes SmartMedia card, at least for newer camera types. The table reflects our current state of knowledge; as soon as we receive new information it will be updated.
