Olympus Optical Co., Ltd. (President: Masatoshi Kishimoto) is pleased to announce the launch of the "HDPS100" ultrahigh-resolution rear display. The "HDPS100" will go on sale in Japan and the United States on April 1st, and will offer users unique image composition and calibration technologies that bring nine projectors together to readily achieve approximately 4 million pixels of resolution for the brighter still/motion images without seam.

The resolution of image capture products has phenomenally improved. There are many digital cameras on the market offering more than 2 million pixels, and Olympus even has one model equipped with an approximately 4-megapixel CCD. This progress has highlighted the limitations of current display monitors. Olympus is launching the "HDPS100" to provide the market with a display system capable of expressing the full impact and quality of high-resolution images. The "HDPS100" represents a new standard for museums, CAD designers, educational institutions, broadcasters and advertisers, where the demand for higher resolution displays is strong.

The "HDPS100" has following four main technology and application features behind its superb cost performance: 1) a large, seamless, approximately 4-megapixel, 100-inch class screen with substantially better resolution than high-definition television; 2) about half-day assembly, installation and adjustment thanks to a unique calibration system that matches colors, brightness and sets position for the nine on-board projectors; 3) a bright screen with approximately 10,000 ANSI lumens ^*2 that is equivalent to the theater projectors and provides vivid color even under normal lighting; and 4) high-end performance from relatively low-priced projectors.

The "HDPS100" has two additional functions as well: 1) vivid display of HDTV and ordinary NTSC-format television in addition to faithful reproduction of high-resolution, approximately 4-megapixel images; and 2) reduced running costs thanks to quick calibration that restores evenness should the projectors degrade over time.

Main Features

1. Large, Seamless, 100-inch Class Screen
   On-board processors automatically divide image data across the projectors, controlling color, distortion and brightness to achieve one uniform, projection image. Combining images from nine projectors to create one seamless, 100-inch class display requires careful image composition and subtle adjustments of color nuance. The "HDPS100" employs a newly developed algorithm to accurately measure and instantaneously process colors.
   
   
2. Ultrahigh-resolution, Approximately 4-megapixel Display
   The "HDPS100" combines nine SVGA 480,000 pixel projectors to achieve a high-resolution, approximately 4-megapixel display. Resolution is almost the double of that found on today's high-end television sets. While conventional large-screen displays offer only coarse imaging that is not viewable at close distances, "HDPS100" images are beautifully rendered even at the distance as close as 30 cm.
   
   
3. Proprietary Calibration System Accelerates Installation and Adjustment
   To this day, color and image adjustment used to be an all-day affair. Olympus' new calibration system accelerates it to less than an hour by using a remote-control to adjust a test pattern on the screen while photographing image data with a digital camera.
   
   
4. Theater-class Brightness
   Each projector has 1,100 ANSI lumens that it uses to illuminate a small area of the screen, giving the full screen brightness of approximately 10,000 ANSI lumens, equivalent to theater projectors. The result is a display that provides vivid images for conferences and lectures without needing to dim the lights, making it easier for participants to take notes.
   
   

1. Original 3-level Screen Design
   Olympus uses an original screen structure made up of a dispersion screen and two lenticular sheets that play the role of two lenses. This original design aids in high-resolution expression.
   
   
2. Wide Viewing Angle
   The original screen design employed in the "HDPS100" achieves smooth viewing over a 120-degree range.
